A coat is not spoiling your dog. For some, it is the difference between a walk they enjoy and a walk they endure. For others, it is a photograph. Here is how to tell which one you have.
Dogs that benefit
Short coated breeds feel cold quickly, and so do small dogs, who lose heat faster because there is more surface area for their size. Older dogs with stiff joints warm up more slowly. Puppies regulate temperature poorly. Dogs recovering from clipping or illness lose their usual insulation. If your dog lifts their paws, tucks their tail, or turns for home early, that is the answer.
Dogs that do not
Thick double coated breeds carry their own system and can overheat under a jacket, especially one that traps damp. If your dog flops into snow happily, leave them to it.
Measure before you buy
Three numbers matter. Neck circumference at the collar. Chest circumference at the widest point behind the front legs. Back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Buy for the largest of the three and check the size chart on the product page, since sizes differ between styles.
What to look for
A coat should clear the belly, since a soaked underside is worse than no coat at all. Look for an opening that lines up with the harness clip, so you are not undressing your dog to attach the lead. Fastenings at the back are easier on dogs that dislike having their legs handled. Pick something washable, because it will get muddy in week one.
Getting it on a reluctant dog
Do not chase the dog with the coat. Leave it on the floor for a day so it becomes furniture. Then drape it over their back without fastening anything, and feed something good. Fasten it the next day, leave it on for a minute, and take it off before they complain. Most dogs accept clothes within a week if nobody rushes.
A note on fit and safety
Two fingers should slide under any strap. Remove clothing indoors, since a warm house plus a padded coat is uncomfortable, and never leave a dressed dog unsupervised with a loose strap that can catch.
